Miracles: Divine Mercy of Jesus

When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him.
16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

“He took up our infirmities
and bore our diseases.”[

Miracles are every day events in human life, whether we perceive are not. Our life and breath are miracles. The love and relationships with which we are surrounded by are miracles. Every day successes and failures are miracles, as both have purpose in our life. Responsibilities and the vested trusts on us are miracles. We can go on and on listing the miracles. Miracles are ordinary events in the faithful life, they are some of the visible testaments of God's loving presence in our life. Miracles are common in these days as they were in those days when Jesus walked the earth. As Jesus said, " I will be with you always to the end of the world", He is faithful in His word, and His presence is visible in the world in the midst of Mother Church and among the faithfuls.

In the above passage from Mathew Chapter 8, there are two miracles stated. One is healing of Peter's motherinlaw, where Jesus touched her hands, she was healed instantly. Other miracles mentioned in the passage is driving out the demons. Jesus used His word to drive them out. As we can see Jesus used multiple methods in miracles. Some times He used His touch and other times He used His word. Particularly, when He was dealing with the evil spirits, He used His words and Scripture. The Son of God, the word of God Himself, used words to drive out the demons. In Mathew chapter 4, we can read about Jesus temptations and testings in the desert by the devil. Devil tested Him three times, in all the three times He quoted the written scripture to Jesus, Jesus defeated Devils tactics in the first two testings by the written word, for the third testing He used His own words with authority commanding devil to go away. In this event, we can see our Lord using His words in two different forms.

Every one of us, in our earthly walk come across the spiritual warfare. The form and shape and tenacity may differ person to person. But no one is exempted from spiritual warfare as long us we live on earth. Evil spirits take many forms and shapes and fashions in attacking human. I have heard from a spiritual warfare seminar, that spiritual warfare is a constant event in human life. Some may pay attention to it and others may not pay attention to it. Whether we choose to address it or ignore it, it is real in the worldly life. If one could overcome small testings by small devils then they progress to be tested in a different level as a progression in their journey. Acknowledging this truth is important, not the fear of the facts. Particularly, when we believe and baptised in Jesus Christ, we are immunized to withstand such trials in our life. Facing the trials with faith is the key to defeat the evil.

Not all the trials or challenges stem from the spiritual warfare. Some of them come from our own fault, wrong judgements, and behaviors. Many of the sufferings originate from our own previous sins and effects of sins takes as a form of suffering, however trivial they may be. However, when spiritual warfare is encountered, it takes certain spiritual equipments to withstand and defeat the tester, as St. Paul called them as Armors of faith. One should be equipped with the battle armors and be ready to face the challenges.
Last weekend I pruned my rose bushes. To prune the rose bushes, I needed few equipments, a Hat to protect from the Sun, a pair of glove to protect the hand, fitting shoes to protect the feet, and a clipper to prune the plant. While pruning the plants, I was reflecting this concept and realized how important to be protected, when we deal with bushes with thorns, similarly, how much more it is vital to be protected against evil all the time, when we know that it is a battle.

As Jesus used His words, it is important for us to read, hear, and meditate His words through Holy Mass and scripture readings, which would help us to apply when in need. Scripture has power to defeat the devil. The more scripture fills us the lesser the dominance of evil will be in us. The more we apply scripture to our daily life in our situations, the better the outcome will be. Praying through scripture is a powerful weapon. Daily attending Holy Mass is a good way to be equipped to be delivered from the evil. Holy Mass provides the forgiveness, word, Christ body and blood, and communion with Christ body, the Mother Church. Resurrected Lord has won the victory for us. In Him, Through Him, and with Him, we are more than conquerors.

Yesterday, we had celebration of Divine mercy, which was celebrated by Rev. Fr. Johnnie Smith. Father, in his homily, he explained the perspectives of mercy of God. Among all the concepts, he had explained, one concept touched me, which was the concept of the power of God's mercy, the Divine mercy. He said, God's mercy is larger and higher than any sufferings and trials we undergo. True, individual human life and all the trials it may contain is so trivial in front of God's mercy. A glimpse of God's mercy is enough to save all the human sufferings or trials. Divine mercy is a shield, which we can take refuge in times of trials. The second we call upon the Lord for His mercy, He will intervene in His will.

Victory belongs to God! The greater in us is than in the world. Victory to the Name of Jesus!
