"Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you"
The world's greatest love story ever told and will be told for ever in the future, which stood as a testament between heaven and earth that marked the human history is the incarnation of Jesus Christ, the God second person the son of God in human nature. It all started with the human first sin that separated human from the divine presence in the garden of Eden. The loving heavenly Father was heart broken by human behavior whom he created for a loving relationship in to His image and life. It is by that rare gift of God's image and life the human has the capacity to invent, discover, create, and show love to the creations. Father considered human as not merely a creation but as His loving image in the world and He loved human immensely. He would do anything to redeem the derailed human nature. In order to redeem the fallen and corrupted senses and actions of human, He challenged the enemy and promised a savior to the world which is recorded in the following verse in the Bible. Then the Lord God said to the snake, " you will be punished.........................15 I will make you and the woman hate each other; her offspring and yours will always be enemies. Her offspring will crush your head, and you will bite their heel." Genesis 2/15.
This was the loving promise of God to redeem the human in to His loving relationship. It is loving Father's effort to embrace His children in to his arms once again. He initiated His salvation task which could have been in His plan B action. Love always finds a way to excuse the loved person. Love accommodates the joy and sufferings in equal parameters. Love accepts the loved ones as they are what ever may be the demands. Love is magnificent in nature of forgiveness that has no limit or definitions. Father's love is the supreme love towards his children that provides, protects, guides and admonishes in times of trouble, and let not any body hurt his children. No one can snatch or deviate any children when a father is nearby. This a common and normal occurrence in the human relationships. Heavenly father' s love has the supreme capacity which surpassed all the definitions of love, when He decided to take the human nature voiding the divine nature; when he embraced the death on behalf of man voiding His immortality; when He came to dwell among the human to guide, to role model and to sacrifice his life as a ransom to the human happiness, freedom, and eternal life.Sin was the defeat of human nature in the face of war against the principalities. It is the warfare with enemy. Human nature could not redeem himself by self effort to come out of sin. Human needed God's intervention to win the sinful situation and to redeem the fallen nature. On the other hand, God created man with his freedom and He did not plan to remove that freedom from him. He respected human dignity. He created the whole world for the human happiness and He did not require his permission to do so. He created everything before the creation of human and he created human at the last and he treated him with great love and care. However, since the nature of the world in human being has caused him to sin, He took the human nature to sanctify and redeem the human nature. The sin involved non obedience and pride. To combat those nature He took the simple child's nature in a simple mother's womb in a humble manger. Obedience, humility combined with human nature and will to subject to the father's will became a perfect sacrifice to redeem the man. Again human did not pray or ask for the redemption. But the love of The Father took the whole responsibility of redeeming human and extended His loving help to the human voluntarily and accomplished the saving plan. Thus He made the salvation available for entire humanity. God selected a human humble mother for the purpose and sent his messenger.
Angel Gabriel, who is described as the peace angel by the bible scholars, was sent to announce the incarnation of Jesus in Mary' womb. Mary the mother of God was selected, predestined for the purpose, preserved and announced as a women in the above biblical passage, who would bring an offspring in to the world , he would crush the head of the enemy. Father's intent of promise was announced to Mary through the angel Gabriel. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."
He announced that Mary has God's favor and God is with Her. It is because of heavenly Father's favor; Mary became the mother God. She became the vessel for God's redemptive love. It is through this immaculate conception she became the ark of the covenant that carried the word of God. The word of God is the second person in trinity and son of God who became the son of man who was Father's promise( word) to the humanity as the savior.
Now, did Mary accept the call immediately? She had her doubts, fear, and discerning questions regarding angel's announcement. She was troubled and she was wondering about it. But Gabriel was very persuasive and he continued with his message as follows understanding the need for explanations: He came to the point.
29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.31You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."
It must have been too much to take at a time for Mary. It must have been looked beyond her capacity to grasp and understand the total impact of this message. It must have been overwhelmingly frightening the young girl who is looking towards her proposed marriage. A news of carrying a child before marriage and the societal reaction to the reality of pregnancy before marriage could have threatened her image, name, reputation, dignity, and her dream of life. There is no doubt her call demanded all the above and beyond all the pains and sorrows attached with her sacrifices through out the savor journey. As a young woman she could have debated within her about accepting the call or refuting the call. While so many thoughts like this going on in her mind, the angel showed an understanding attitude to her reflecting Father's favor filled loving message. Mary gathered all her courage and asked the angel one question which is very significant to her dignity.
The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37For nothing is impossible with God."
Mary accepted the call with the whole heart by calling herself as Lord's servant. Her heroic decision to empty herself at God's purpose risking her life and everything she had for human redemptive cause made possible of immaculate conception. Her cooperation with Holy spirit in conceiving and carrying the savior to the world represented human cooperation in the salvation to the world. Her acceptance is the human response to the father's love and loving relationship. Therefore she became the mother of God and mother of all the creation with God's favor.
