Ave Maria! Wedding in Cana

John Chapter 2
"On the third day there was a wedding* in Cana* in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.a2Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.3When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”4* [And] Jesus said to her, “Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.”b5His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.”c6* Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, deach holding twenty to thirty gallons.7Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim.8Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.”* So they took it.9And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom10and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.”11Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs* in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.e"

Wedding at Cana

Whenever, I read this passage of the scripture, I am struck with awe to see the assertive faith of Mother Mary in Her Son. I visualize Her intercession for others. I also witness Her request to the disciples. Wedding in Cana, has high significance in Jesus ministry, as it was there, Jesus performed His first miracle. Human Jesus was revealed in His divine charisma and He had divine introduction to the world through His mother's request. I always wonder at the request of Mother Mary, thinking, why and for what reason, she informed Jesus about the lack of wine in the wedding feast?  I also would like to echo Jesus's question to her. Humanly speaking, she had genuine love for the neighbors always, as she used to help elderly Elizabeth. She was very sensitive to the neighbor's needs in their difficult moments. I am encouraged to think that the same mother intercedes for us in our needs constantly. There is no end for her apostolic ministry.

I am intrigued by Jesus answer as He indicated that His time has not yet come.  It appears to me, Jesus understood the indicating request of Mary, beyond just the scarcity of the wine. It looks as if they both had a conversation, which is mutually understood by each other, yet looks like a mystery to me. Further, I am so impressed by the instructive conversation of Mary to the disciples, saying do whatever He tells you to do. She did not explain further to Jesus but she turned towards the disciples and instructed them. She was brave, she was very assertive, and she was prophetic in saying do what ever He tells you to do. This statement of Mary reveals that she had known the time of Jesus's first miracle. She knew Her son's divine capacity beyond His human attire. She understood His ministry and call. She appears as a prophet to me in this passage, she knew what was going to happen there. The same Mother not just intercedes for us in our needs, but she also instructs us to do what ever He tells us to do in our needs as well.

Next, I am so enlighten by the obedience of Jesus to His Mother's request. Although He believed that His time has not come, He instructed the disciples to fill the jars with water. Then He asked them to draw the wine from the water jars. Jesus's first miracle reveals natural and spiritual understandings in multiple levels. Today, the same mother intercedes for us and Her son listens to Her prayers for us. Our petitions becomes the blessings, as water turned into wine at Cana. What a perfect model of motherly love and intercession?
