Mercy of God: Is it human to be merciful?
Mercy is it a human attribute? Is it humanly possible to be merciful?
From Jesus sayings and teachings, the answer is yes, mercy is a human attribute and it is humanly possible. Human is capable of showing mercy to others and human has the inherited qualities of mercy from the Heavenly Father. Jesus, the Lord our savior not just taught us to be merciful but also He stood as a testament to the mercy of God. Jesus also gave us the standard to be merciful when he stated,"Be merciful, just as [also] your Father is merciful." Luke 6/36.The standard of mercy is the mercy of our Heavenly Father.
Human is created in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, human have inherited qualities of Father, from where the good qualities of human take root. Mercy is a gift of God and it is a quality of God. When human show mercy, that person is reflecting the mercy of God, which is a reflection of divine action in obedience to the Father. When Jesus asked us to be merciful, He did not demand us to do the things that we are not capable off. He commanded us to be merciful, because we have the potential goodness of showing mercy hidden within us, as human. We are capable of showing mercy to others.
Thinking about the merciful qualities of human in the context of today's world can be a far stretch, as human have lost touch with almost any good qualities with which they are created. We human have drifted into the ocean of self indulgence where mercy can be an alien concept. We say we are civilized, modern, and technologically equipped people. However, we see ourselves pushed into the primitive status of eye to eye contests in the majority of the times in our human dealings. Competitions, greed, and intolerance for anything and everything has corrupted our mind, heart, and soul. In this background, application and exercise of mercy beginning in a small degree within oneself , in the family, and in the community may help to heal the world.
Being merciful is a channel of healing of oneself, family, and a community.
