Highlights of Irudhaya Annai Church ( Immaculate Heart of Mary church): Periyasamypuram; Parents House



Irudaya Annai church( Immaculate Heart of Mary Church) in Periyasamypuram is a divine blessing and gift for the village, which has been a channel of divine protection, guidance in keeping the people together in times of joy and struggles.This church is a constituent church of Tuticorin diocese. Some of the natural blessings of Periyasamypuram include natural salt fields in the banks of salty river and at the seashore delta areas, (the popular TATA company of India has a salt factory branch in this village), Dense palm trees groove, which produces palm juices and jaggery and sugar, and a plentiful bounty of sea and a river filled with shrimps in season, few vegetable gardens and few paddy fields around the village. Clean beach sand open clean air, short Karuvel trees forests, piny thorn bushes, Neem trees, and peacocks,goats, cows, and hens and cocks, cookoo birds, foxes,and of course many kinds of snakes cobra, viper, and green snakes are some of them ... etc.... are some of the highlight attributes of this land.

The church in initiation in late 1800s was the substation of Vembar church. However, in my great great grand father's time, it became a parish constituting three other substations. Periyasamypuram is a panchayit village, which means it is a head village which administer to seven other surrounding villages for govt administration purposes for school, post office, health care etc....... So there are govt appointed administrative personnel reside in this village as per appointment. However, the parish Priest of this church has the major say to the welfare of this region.

Daily life in Periyasamypuram begins with the early morning church bell followed by few spiritual songs via speaker, followed by scripture readings and morning prayers through speakers in which people rise and say prayer at home while getting ready for their day. Everybody work in this village including elderly people busy people. The morning prayers are read by the sacristian. The parish priest says daily mass after the morning prayers and the mass can be heard through speakers all over the village.The people work in the farms, beach, salt factories can hear the mass while they go to work. In periyasamypuram many try to go for daily mass before their work. Here the church is not just the worship place but the church functions enrich people day today life and the worship is the way of life of this little hamlet.
