Vasco d agama was followed by Alvara gabral in 1501. This second expedition brought eight Franscican missionaries who became the pionners of morden missions in India. Of the eight Franscicans missionaries that came over to India Cabral the author of Mystras Lusitanas do oriente says, “ one converted and baptized Rajah or prince of Calicut, another a Rajah of Cochin, another king of Cannaore, and yet another a prince of the royal house of Narasings Vijayanagar.” It is interesting to note that at that period, Vailankanni and Nagapatinnam were within the limits of the kingdom of Vijayanagar. The head quarters and the main field of Portuguese missionary enterprise in India was Goa. However, we find the Portuguese Fransciscan missionaries in charge of the tomb of St, Thomas at Mylapore in Chennai in 1534. And they were in Nagapattinam in 1534 and earlier still in Tuticorin, both places in the east coast in south India were also known as the Coromandal coast. By 1606 the missions in the constitution of the diocese of Mylapore by virtue of the Papal Bull issued by His Holiness Pope Paul V. The first Bishop of Mylapore was Dom Sebastino de San Pedro. From that time onwards Vailankanni came under the jurisdiction of the diocese of Mylapore.

There are supporting documents to indicate that St. Francis Xaviour visited Vailankanni Nagapattinam twice in the year of 1545, from there he walked to Chennai as a pilgrimage to St. Thomas tomb. It is recorded that while the saint was in Vailankanni, he was perplexed by many doubts, upon which he proceded to St. Thomas tomb at Mylapore, where his doubts were cleard and dissolved in the year of 1545 on March 29th, which was palm Sunday.
