Blessed Mother Teresa: Spirit of compassion
Mother Teresa works and deeds were the reflection of divine compassion. The meaning of compassion is a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune,
accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering ( http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/compassion).
Compassion can originate from human spirit and it may be augmented by the divine grace. Majority of the people in the world who help the poor or perform charitable works may operate from this status of compassion with or without acknowledging the divine assistance. But very few people carry out the charitable deeds with divine compassion. Blessed Mother Teresa is one of them, who served people with divine compassion, conviction, and commitment. In all the status of charitable deeds, the source of charity begins from God and it is accomplished by human. Spirit of God who is the Spirit of compassion enable and move human hearts and guide them in charitable deeds.
Divine compassion is a gift and call from God to assist the poor and sufferings. The charitable deeds which have divine compassion as foundation multiply in multi-fold in the eyes of men and God. Charitable deeds are humanly behavior with God's providence and grace, which reflects the goodness of human and God in all the status, in all time and in all places. The source of charitable deeds is God and they come in many designs and fashions from the people from all walks of life, irrespective of their believes, values, or even sometimes with or without their acknowledgement of God's presence among them. Charitable acts of human are God's plan for those who are in need. No help is small or negligible. Mother Teresa had strong conviction on the importance and significance of each individual in helping others. She said that individual efforts may be like a drop in an ocean, but if one did not participate, the ocean will be less of that missing drop.
The source of Mother's mission was God and His love. She operated under the influence of divine grace and compassion, which led to the compassion, conviction and committed life. In the church history, many saints have lived a life of charity and divine compassion. St. Vincent De Paul was one of them. He reflected God's compassion in his charitable deeds, as his mission was also helping poor and sufferings. Mother Teresa's compassion and committed life may be comparable to the compassionate mission of St. Vincent De Paul. He believed that the spirit of compassion is truly the Spirit of God.
